CARNIVAL IN VENICE 2008

carneval.jpg

You may think at the time of Casanova, Carnival was the right excuse for abandoning oneself to libertinage and for some it was true. The fog, the masks, the music, the dances…..all seemed set on purpose for mysterious loves, romance, pleasures.

Now let’s go back to the Carnival in Venice: here everything contributed to give life to a tradition of Carnival feasts, parades, masked balls ( both open to pubblic and private), an atmosphere appreciated by adults and children.

What does the Carnival of Venice hold in store for us in 2008? SENSATION! This is the 2008 Venice Carnival title: Plenty of sensations between “calli e campielli”, the typical venetian streets and small squares. In the five neighbourhoods, yhe “Sestieri”, all of your senses will be stimulated: hearing, sights, taste, touch, smell and the most mysterious, the sisxt!

As usual there will be the Volo dell’Angelo ( Flight yhe Angel), the Festa delle Marie ( Celebration of the Marie), the Gran Corteo Storico ( Great Historic Parade) and the Sfilata delle Maschere ( Mask Procession). There will be fun, masks and entertainment everywhere to liven up the week of the Carnival of Venice from Juanary 25th to February 5, 2008.

The days of the Carnival of Venice are magical. Masked parties held all over the city and in buildings and if you do not have a mask, don’t worry: the mask shops propose the novelties of 2008, the result of Venetian creativity and tradition in papier-machè masks. In the various Venetian costumeshops you have but to choose from dozens of rental costumes to find the most original one to parade around St.Mark’s Square or have fun in the many typical costume parties held in the homes and buildings all over Venice.

VENICE SIMPLON-ORIENT-EXPRESS

exp1.jpgexp2.jpgexp3.jpg

A dresam travel in one city from dream?

The Orient Express was the brainchild of the Belgian Georges Nagelmackers, who inaugurated service in 1883. In 1906 the Simplon tunnel was excavated through the mountains between Switzerland and Italy ( 19,8Km/12mi). The route could extend from Milan to Venice and on to Costantinople (56hr from Paris). After World WarII, the legendary luxury train’s financial problems eventually forced its closure in 1977.

Credited with its revival, American businessman James B Sherwood bought two sleeper cars from a Sotheby’s auction. the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, lauched in 1982, leaves from London for Venice on Thursdays and Sundays, stopping in paris, Innsbruck and Verona. Northbound trains leave Venice on Wednesdays and saturdays.

The full trip takes about 32hr, covering 1715Km/1065 mi. The trains have been restored to their former splendour, and include wood panelling, Lalique glass and Art Deco style lamps.

EPIPHANY IN VENICE WITCHES ROWING RACE

This is an extraordinary regatta with costumes celebrated on Epiphany day along the Grand Canal. A fun regatta among old members of the oldest Venetian rowing society, the Bucintoro.

Fifty men dressed as “Befane” challenge each other on the main part of the Grand Canal from S. Tomà up to Rialto Bridge. Arrival of the Befane is represented by a gigantic sock hung over the Rialto bridge for the occasion.

The Befana is one of the most popular traditions of the Italian collective consciousness. Her legend dates back to pre-Christian times. Nowadays, in the popular Christian culture, the Befana brings presents as a reminder of those given to Baby Jesus by the Magi. This very charming old lady flies on a broom bringing a bag stuffed with gifts on the night between the fifth and sixth of January. Then, sliding down the houses chimneys, she stuffs the socks left hanging by the children.

When: January 6, time: 11am Where: in the Grand Canal.
Departure from Palazzo Balbi in San Tomà and arrival in Rialto.
