SAN FRANCESCO DEL DESERTO ISLAND

san_francesco_deserto1.jpg  This little island is ideal for anyone seeking respite from commotion and crowds, particularly in  the summer when the islands of the lagoon can get very busy.

THE ISLAND IS SITUATED JUST SOUTH OF BURANO

MONASTERY

Before St Francis landed on the island on his way back from the Holy Land in 1220, San francesco del Deserto was known as the “Isola delle Vigne” ( The Island of the Two Vines). Its name was changed when a house for Franciscan novitiates was estabilished on the island in 1224. The term “deserto” could be e reference to the island left “deserted” when the monks fled from a malaria epidemic. On four occasions the monastery played host to Bernadino of Siena, who may have paid for the wall in the cloisters is a 13C relief of two crossed arms, said to be the arm of Christ and the sleeved arm of St Francis.

The island’s vast park overlooks the lagoon and offers a clear view of Burano. It is particularly beatiful here, almost pastoral in feel. which is unusual for the lagoon islands.

GETTING THERE

The island where St Francis landed is still reached by private boat today, departing from Burano - where the canal meets the lagoon as it laps the water’s edge in Piazza Galuppi - not far from the front of San Martino. The cost includes the 10 minute journey to and from the island and wating time in beetween; ask the boatman, who will make himself known, about the price. The guided visit lasts about an hour and is undertaken by a monk. Visitors are advised to leave a donation. Visitors spending a few days in retreat with the monastic community by prior arrangement will be wel-comed off the boat.

PEGGY: A LIFETIME DEDICATED TO ART

ve-11874.jpg184659789_ebc395d0ab_m1.jpg

The 60th birthday of the Gugenheim collection in Venice

2008 is a very important year for the Peggy Guggenheim Collection: the year in which the Peggy collection celebrates its 60th birtday. A long array of events, temporaney exhibits, conferences, and debates, educational work-shops, free guided tours, projections of film in the garden and the concert for Peggy’s birthday, will retrace and relive the moments which have marked the life of this American patron from her arrival in Venice in 1948, through history of the works of her Collection, of her artists friends, her talent and passion for art. Starting exactly from the contents of the two contemporaney exhibits. Coming of Age: American Art, 1850s to 1950s ( June 28 - October 12 - 2008) and Carlo Cardazzo. A new vision of Art ( November 1 - February 9 - 2009 ), this rich program intends on one hand, to delve into the importance of the ties between Peggy and American avant-garde, and on the other, her great influence inside the Venetian artistic panorama of the 40s and 50s, thus placing under the limelight two different aspects of the unique great artistic passion that enlivened the existence of this extraordinary American patron.

Since 1980, one year after the passing of the American collector, Palazzo Venier dei Leoni has become a museum, which today numbers almost 400,000 visitors a year. The visit of what was the home of Prggy, admiring the master-pieces of her collection and enjoying the quietness of the Garden of the scultures is a sort of leap into the memory of a legendary patron, who has marked with her genuineness, talent and passion, the art of the XX century.

JEWISH CLASSICAL MUSIC IN VENICE

ghetto-venezia1.jpg

Liturgy, cultured music, popular traditions.

The Hebrew Museum of Venice will propose to its visitors and to a broader audience a series of weekly concerts entrusted and played by the duo formed by the flautist Anna Fortis and pianist Cristina Ciravolo. The new initiative- supported by Codess Culture, which for years has been handling the museum services to the public aim at spreading the knowledge of the lesser known aspects of the Hebrew musical culture.

The choice, in fact, favours some of the famous liturgics pieces, sonatas by Jewish musicians died in the concentration camps, works of non-Jewish authors who have wanted to dedicate their compositions to the Jewish world. The arrangements by flaute and piano, often manage to suggest a fascination that only the most typical Venetian atmosphere knows how to render solemn and refined.

Next to the visit to the museum and synagogues, the visitor can now expand his or her own awareness and learning of a culture so important for the modern civilisation.

Concerts are held every Tuesdays at 5.30 p.m.

THE CHARACTERISTIC AREA OF VENICE: THE HERB and FISH MARKETS

blog2.jpg

blog1.jpg                                                                                                                                                                       The current layout of the area reflects the way in which, centuries ago, specific urban criteria were brought to bear in organising the herb and fish markets. The area closest to the Grand Canal is used for depositing goods and for bulk selling, while retail selling, from the largest goods to the smallest and most precious, takes place in the area that goes from the Grand Canal to the many stalls and shops in the main Rialto district. The administrative-commercial activities are all concetrated in the area around the market, in Campo di Rialto. The Erbaria, or herb and vegetable market, is contained within a triangle defined by Palazzo dei Camerlenghi, the Fabbriche Vecchie and Campo di Rialto and a part of the Fabbriche Nuove.

The large Calle Naranzaria ( or Orangerie - used for moving shipments of citrus fruits) links the market area with Ruga degli Oresi. This is where the general retail market begins, with its cornucopia of fruit and vegetable stalls, distributed along Calle dei Oresi, Cordaria, Casaria, along the Fabbrica Nuova right up to Campo della Pescheria ( or the fish market). Campo della Pescheria was paved as early as 1531, and was in part given over to fruit and vegetable stalls while the fishmongers occupied the shops on the ground floor of the nearby buildings. Fishmongers, in fact, are now mainly concetrated in the area that goes from Rio de le Beccarie, under the porticoes of the 20th building, right up to the buildings in Calle de le Beccarie. It must be borne in mind that up to the end of the 18th century there were onli 150 fishmongers.

This is explained by the fact that the only people allowed to sell fish were fishermen from the islands of San Nicolò and Poveglia who were at least 50 years old and had worked for at last 20. This was seen a short of reward for anyone who had suffered the hard lot reserved for fishermen of the period.

The part of the new building giving onto the Grand Canal is now used exclusively for the delivery of goods, as it its not generally thought appropriate for stalls. In fact, there is a little rhyme that can be heard in the markets about the new building: “massa alta i la gà fata, se se bagna col stravento, manco mal che semo in centro e no ne toca gnanca el sol” (”they’ve built it too high, and you get wet when its rains and the wind blows - thank God where here in the centre of town, and we don’t even get a ray of sunshine”).

JUST FRONT THIS AREA THERE IS A CHARMING APARTMENT FOR YOUR HOLIDAYS:

The apartment, situated on the second floor (third floor American) of a small building, faces one of the most picturesque places in Venice, Campo delle Beccherie, where the Rialto Market begins.  The market sells fruit, vegetables, and seafood and is often utilized by cinematographers to film scenes that epitomize the Venetian ambience.  The location also allows the tourist to reach all principal destinations and attractions in the city easily.

Besides being close to the market, the area is also rich with stores and shops of every kind, restaurants and osterie where you can try the famous “cicchetti” (small tapas-style appetizers), bars, markets, butchers and bakeries as well as internet points.

The apartment is about 70 square meters.  It has an independent entrance that crosses through an inner courtyard.  The apartment and the building have recently been radically restored.  The property is characterized by exposed wooden ceiling beams and stone door  with a secured door and double-glassed windows that look onto the Campo delle Beccherie and slightly to the side, the Grand Canal.

The apartment is composed of:

A small entrance

A spacious and bright living room with a kitchen corner complete with electric oven, stove, refrigerator and freezer, etc.

A master bedroom

A single bedroom
A bathroom with toilet, bidet, and ample shower

Carefully and tastefully furnished  with hardwood pieces, this apartment can be easily reached by the vaporetto ACTV number 1 by getting off at the “Rialto-Mercato” stop

VENICE HOLIDAYS IN CHARMING APARTMENT WITH GRAND CANAL VIEW

got34.jpging4-sito.jpging2-sito.jpging1-sito.jpg

This exclusive and refined apartment is situated on the ground floor of a Venetian palace that enjoys an incredible view n to a garden facing the Grand Canal. The neighborhood of this apartment is of particular artistic interested.

It is located next to Campo San Zadegola  and Campo San Giacomo dell’Orio, where you find the church of the same name, one of the oldest religious buildings in Venice, it dates back to the 10 century. The interior is rich in artistic treasures, ancient sculptures and works by famous artist including Lorenzo Lotto amd Paolo Veronese.A ten minute walk away is the museum of moderm art, Cà Pesaro, a baroque palace on the Grand Canal, originally commissioned to Longhena by the Pesaro family.

Pink House is easily reached by vaporetto by getting off at the Riva di Biasio ( the apartment is located only 10 minuties away from Piazzale Roma bus station and the Santa Lucia train station by vaporetto).Besides its fantastic location on the Grand Canal, this apartment is also unique in that it is decorated by the owners’ exquisite taste classicaly integrating the color pink into much of the furniture, creating a refined and elegant atmosphere in the flat. The apartment is composed of an entrance foyer, a spacious and bright living room with a view of the garden, sofa and fireplace, master bedroom with bed french size, another bedroom wirh two single beds, one bathroom with bathtub, a second bathroom with shower and washing machine, utility closet, and a small private courtyard.

The prestigious communal garden is governed by the Ministry of Art Preservation in Venice. It is required to follow the strict communal rules that prohibit walking on or lying in the grass, allowing children to play, bringing animals, or disturbing the neighbors.

Ideal for comfortably accommodating up to 4 people.

The apartment is located just front “Campo Sanb Zan Degolà”: the islandfacing the Grand Canal between Rio del Fontego and Rio di San Zan Degolà ( St John the Beheaded) is elongated and rather less wide at its centre. The area between the Grand Canal and the centre of the island has Campo San Zan Degolà at its heart. The campo is rather small, and is in one of the quietest areas of the city, where the buildings have for the most part maintained their characteristic features, volumes and architectural forms.Very recent restoration work has only eliminated the sense of desolation that the campo once had, especially  when it was still convered in weeds.

The few historical references to the campo are perfectly in keeping with its very retired and perhaps even slightly wild apperance. It was, for example, once inhabited by Biasio ( whose name was then bestowed on the nearby bank of the Grand Canal), who killed children and then stewed them for dinner, and whose punishment was as cruel as his crimes. The Campo is dominated by the church of the same name, which was founded in 1007. It has been constantly, the most important restorations taking place in the 16th century and 1703, when it was completely restructured. The church is the only example from which we can deduce tangible evidence about the size and structure of the many Veneto-Byzantine buildings that have since been so modified that their original form has been completely lost. The interior is of the Gothic basilica type and there are still remains of 12th-13th century Byzantine frescoes.

ASOLO : THE BEATIFUL MEIGHBOURHOOD OF VENICE

immagine21.gif

At only one hour by car from Venice you can to visit ASOLO, is one of the best-known and loveliest villages in Italy. Called: “the city of the hundred horizons”, its charm exudes from the beauty of the views from all directions.

HOW TO GET THERE :| Where to park

BY CAR

From the east: Treviso Nord motorway exit, via Montebelluna
From the south: Padua Est motorway exit, via Castelfranco
From the west: Vicenza Est motorway exit, via Cittadella Castelfranco
Dueville motorway exit, via Bassano

AN ITINERARY AMONG THE MONUMENTS

Works of great historical, artistic and cultural value, alleyways, mansions and arcades. all in the city, they speak of an ages-old past and stand almost as if among the halls of a permanent exhibition, where you can admire nature’s unique work combined with the genius of the human mind. The concept of a “widespread museum” finds one of its best expressions in this place. The clearly medieval imprint of Asolo Huddles within the ancient walls  e and is dominated by the Fortress , an imposing medieval construction built on Mount Ricco to guard the city. Central Piazza Garibaldi with its sixteenth-century fountain  topped by the winged lion of St. Mark might be considered the heart of the city; from here you are within a short walk of some of Asolo’s main monuments: The Castle , fortress in the Middle Ages that was home to Caterina Cornaro and her Renaissance court, modified several times over the years, with the characteristic original Reata towers today houses the theatre dedicated to Eleonora Duse . The Palazzo della Ragione , a fifteenth-century construction with a façade emblazoned with frescoes by Contarini (1560) currently houses the City Museum . The medieval Cathedral , historical seat of the bishop reworked in the Eighteenth century to a design by Giorgio Massari, contains important works by Lorenzo Lotto (Assunta), Jacopo da Ponte, known as the Bassano, (Assunta) and Sebastiano Bastiani (San Girolamo). On the Northeast side of the adjacent Piazza Brugnoli , where the Roman baths were to be found in ancient times, you can visit the last stretch of the Roman aqueduct called “la Bot”. The seventeenth-century Scotti-Pasini villa dominates this square from the top of its tiered gardens .

In Piazza D’Annunzio the Palazzo Beltramini , worthy of careful examination. It was revamped in the eighteenth century by architect Giorgio Massari and is the City Hall nowadays. Also to be seen is the Casa della Duse (Duse House) , in via Canova, with a commemorative stone dictated by the poet Gabriele D’Annunzio. The arcaded streets, the frescoed façades with two- and three-mullioned windows and the balconies are particularly characteristic. Among these is via Browning where the English Poet once lived: the street is overlooked by buildings and houses in Gothic and Baroque style with frescoes from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. A little further on, we find the small sixteenth-century Zen Fount and Villa Freya , residence of Freya Stark, the garden of which contains traces of the Roman Theatre, among other things. If we widen the radius of the distance from the centre, the thirteenth-century Church of S. Gottardo  with its interesting frescoes and the casa-fondazione Malipiero (house-foundation); are worthy of note as are the Convent of St. Pietro e Paolo ; the Church of S. Caterina  with fifteenth-century frescoes. And again, moving slightly away from the city wall, Casa Longobarda , the Church of S. Anna , on the hill with the cemetery containing the tombs of Eleonora Duse and Freya Stark. The Villa degli Armeni , near Sant’Anna, has frescoes on the façade dating back to the seventeenth century depicting biblical scenes; an underground tunnel connects it to the annexe called “Il Fresco” that looks out on the opposite slope of the hill, turned towards the city. To the west of the city, in the outlying administrative district of Pagnano, stands an old structure called the “Maglio” , a small forge dating back to 1468, in working order up to a few years ago and now restored.
